Family owned and operated since 1937, Somerset Creamery prides itself on rich, homemade ice cream made the old fashioned way. Founded by Victor and Mary Spanick, their first store was called Creamrich and was located on County Street in Somerset. From the start, the emphasis was on quality natural ingredients and courteous service.
During World War II, Mr. Spanick stopped production to serve, but returned to open a shop in Somerset called the Milk Can. Housed in a milk bottle shaped building, the Milk Can was a Somerset landmark for years. By the early sixties, there were three stores, one near the Stone Bridge in Tiverton, RI, the Milk Can, and the current location on Route 6 in Somerset.
In 1981 when Vic was ready to retire, his daughter Carolyn and her husband Roger Berube decided to take over the last remaining store, the Route 6 location. In 1997 Somerset Creamery opened a new store on Cape Cod, on Route 28A in Cataumet and Victor’s grandson Jason became the newest ice cream maker. Finding that no one on The Cape made a cranberry ice cream Somerset Creamery developed Cranberry Bog Ice Cream®. A unique creation of craisins, walnuts and dark chocolate all mixed in a cranberry based ice cream. Today it is an extremely popular flavor among customers and one of the top flavors sold. An additional store in Somerset on Route 138 was opened in 2010. Vic’s other grandson Matthew became the third ice cream maker and today many other family members are involved in the business.
At Somerset Creamery ice cream is made daily with the finest ingredients available using the same great recipes Vic used. In addition to homemade ice cream, waffle cones are baked fresh daily at all locations. Also available are sundaes, banana splits, frappes, floats and hand packed pints and quarts to bring home.
